Going Wireless: Why Apple Didn't Include a Wall Charger with their Latest iPhones

If you’ve recently ordered the iPhone 12, you’ll notice a couple things missing from the box that you may have expected to find - earbuds and a wall charger. Apple’s stated reason for not including these accessories were environmental - citing that by omitting earbuds and chargers they are able to significantly reduce the size of the boxes and their phone’s impact on the environment. Undoubtedly, many will lament that Apple is making them buy accessories that were previously included.

Zooming out a bit, it’s clear this is a move that falls in line with what Apple has been planning (and we’ve been predicting since 2018) for quite some time - a shift to a completely wireless electronic ecosystem.  Which includes, most notably, the complete removal of the lighting charging port. Most consumers nowadays prefer to use wireless accessories - Qi Chargers instead of cables, Airpods instead of traditional ear buds, and so on. While there may be some growing pains in the beginning, going completely wireless makes sense and at this point seems inevitable.

While consumers are mostly on board, some hotels are still focused on traditional charging methods, and some are convinced USB-C is the future. (read more here about why it’s too late for Apple to go all-in on USB-C)  We believe the hotels that recognize these trends and embrace wireless charging sooner rather than later, will put themselves at a significant competitive advantage over their peers. Let’s ditch the old guard - the AC outlets, clunky cords, and a difficult to user interface - for something more modern. Something that wows guests, and something that will be expected in the near future.

We don’t think it could be any more obvious. It’s time for wireless charging in your Hotel. Make the switch today.
